Daily Proverbs

How long will you lie there, you sluggard?
When will you get up from your sleep?
A little sleep, a little slumber,
a little folding of the hands to rest—
and poverty will come on you like a thief
and scarcity like an armed man.

The Holy Bible : Today’s New International Version. 2005 (Pr 6:9–11). Grand Rapids, MI: Zondervan.

COMMENT:

The author of the book of Proverbs is not opposed to sleep, rest or vacations. He is, instead, warning against sloth: of not doing the job you need to be doing. In fact, of course, sleep deprivation can lower productivity considerably, besides the health problems it can create.
