Spam and spammers are justly despised. Not only do I despise them for wasting my time sending me offers for viagra, stocks, and loans that I don’t need, I despite them even more because they create problems on the server side of things.

On Sunday morning, about 3:00 AM the Quartz Hill School of Theology website and mailserver went down. Why? Because, sometime back in 2004, a spammer hacked into our server and used it for spam. Since then, the hard drive of the server has slowly been filling up with junk, making the drive run hard. The junk finally filled the hard drive to capacity: there was no space left on it at all. When Rick Curtis and Patrick, at Quantum Computing began working on it, they discovered an awful problem that took them more than 14 hours to fix. They finally had to yank the hard drive out of the server and wound up clearing more than 30 gigabytes of junk from it.

Thankfully, the website and mailserver are finally back on line and in the next few weeks, Rick will be moving the School of Theology site to a new server, which is newer and faster. We may even get a redesigned look out of it.
