\u201cThus says the Lord of hosts,
\n\u201cThey will thoroughly glean as the vine the remnant of Israel;
\nPass your hand again like a grape gatherer
\nOver the branches.\u201d
\nTo whom shall I speak and give warning
\nThat they may hear?
\nBehold, their ears are closed
\nAnd they cannot listen.
\nBehold, the word of the Lord has become a reproach to them;
\nThey have no delight in it.
\nBut I am full of the wrath of the Lord;
\nI am weary with holding it in.
\n\u201cPour it out on the children in the street
\nAnd on the gathering of young men together;
\nFor both husband and wife shall be taken,
\nThe aged and the very old.
\n\u201cTheir houses shall be turned over to others,
\nTheir fields and their wives together;
\nFor I will stretch out My hand
\nAgainst the inhabitants of the land,\u201d declares the Lord.
\nFor from the least of them even to the greatest of them,
\nEveryone is greedy for gain,
\nAnd from the prophet even to the priest
\nEveryone deals falsely.
\n\u201cThey have healed the brokenness of My people superficially,
\nSaying, \u2018Peace, peace,\u2019
\nBut there is no peace.
\n\u201cWere they ashamed because of the abomination they have done?
\nThey were not even ashamed at all;
\nThey did not even know how to blush.
\nTherefore they shall fall among those who fall;
\nAt the time that I punish them,
\nThey shall be cast down,\u201d says the LORD. (Jeremiah 6:9-15)<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n

The fortune teller makes a fortune for himself by predicting just what his customers want to hear. A message of peace, prosperity, and health will always find a gullible audience willing to unload its last penny for the pleasant hype. <\/p>\n

As God\u2019s people in Jeremiah\u2019s day stood on the brink of destruction, watching circumstances turn against them, they were willing to suspend disbelief and cling to the hopeful words of those more concerned with lining their own pockets than with the truth of God.<\/p>\n

They had become like couch potatoes fattened on empty gods. The personal trainer\u2014Babylon\u2014had come to kick their lazy bodies off their beds of ease. But they only wanted a simple, quick and painless fix from the disaster they had created. <\/p>\n

God\u2019s Babylonian diet was the only solution to their polytheism however. And one way or another, they were going to get on that treadmill and lose it all. In the end, they\u2019d be happy with the results. But they didn\u2019t want to hear it. <\/p>\n

God will take us through what we need to go through. He\u2019ll get the truth to us one way or another. But likely as not, we\u2019ll resist him every step of the way. <\/p>\n
