{"id":6981,"date":"2015-10-05T00:05:26","date_gmt":"2015-10-05T07:05:26","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/nettelhorst.com\/blog1\/?p=6981"},"modified":"2015-10-04T21:25:40","modified_gmt":"2015-10-05T04:25:40","slug":"count-on-god","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/nettelhorst.com\/blog1\/2015\/10\/05\/count-on-god\/","title":{"rendered":"Count on God"},"content":{"rendered":"<blockquote><p><em>This is a message about Egypt: <br \/>\nThe LORD comes to Egypt, <br \/>\nriding swiftly on a cloud. <br \/>\nThe people are weak from fear. <br \/>\nTheir idols tremble <br \/>\nas he approaches and says, <br \/>\n\u201cI will punish Egypt <br \/>\nwith civil war\u2014 <br \/>\nneighbors, cities, and kingdoms <br \/>\nwill fight each other. <br \/>\n\u201cEgypt will be discouraged <br \/>\nwhen I confuse their plans. <br \/>\nThey will try to get advice <br \/>\nfrom their idols, <br \/>\nfrom the spirits of the dead, <br \/>\nand from fortunetellers. <br \/>\nI will put the Egyptians <br \/>\nunder the power of a cruel, <br \/>\nheartless king. <br \/>\nI, the LORD All-Powerful, <br \/>\nhave promised this.\u201d  (Isaiah 19:1-4)<\/em>\n<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Lies can live for a long time.  For thousands of years Egypt had endured as a major world power, independent and wealthy.  They had worshiped their gods, performed their rituals with little change for those same thousands of years, never feeling the need for change, never knowing that the foundation of their civilization was like the sand beyond the Nile.<\/p>\n<p>But God told them the time would come when their civilization would come crashing down.  A few hundred years after Isaiah, the Macedonian general, Alexander the Great, conquered Egypt completely.  He took its wealth for his own, and crowned himself Pharaoh.  When he died, one of his generals, Ptolemy, took the Egyptian throne in his place. That general\u2019s descendents ruled Egypt thereafter, known as the Ptolemies.  The last of Ptolemy\u2019s descendants was a woman named Cleopatra. When she killed herself with an asp\u2019s bite, the Egyptian nation was absorbed by the Roman Empire.<\/p>\n<p>The idols, fortune tellers, the mediums\u2014those the Egyptians had depended upon for thousands of years\u2014ultimately failed them.  In the end, the Egyptians came to realize they had put their trust in empty lies.  <\/p>\n<p>We need to be careful about who and what we put our trust in.
