{"id":6609,"date":"2015-06-13T00:05:08","date_gmt":"2015-06-13T07:05:08","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/nettelhorst.com\/blog1\/?p=6609"},"modified":"2015-06-12T16:09:11","modified_gmt":"2015-06-12T23:09:11","slug":"respect-the-son","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/nettelhorst.com\/blog1\/2015\/06\/13\/respect-the-son\/","title":{"rendered":"Respect the Son"},"content":{"rendered":"<blockquote><p><em>I will tell the promise <br \/>\nthat the LORD made to me: <br \/>\n\u201cYou are my son, because today <br \/>\nI have become your father. <br \/>\nAsk me for the nations, <br \/>\nand every nation on earth <br \/>\nwill belong to you. <br \/>\nYou will smash them <br \/>\nwith an iron rod <br \/>\nand shatter them <br \/>\nlike dishes of clay.\u201d <br \/>\nBe smart, all you rulers, <br \/>\nand pay close attention. <br \/>\nServe and honor the LORD; <br \/>\nbe glad and tremble. <br \/>\nShow respect to his son <br \/>\nbecause if you don\u2019t, <br \/>\nthe LORD might become furious <br \/>\nand suddenly destroy you.  <br \/>\nBut he blesses and protects <br \/>\neveryone who runs to him. (Psalm 2:7-12)<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>How long do you want to live?  It depends on your relationship with God\u2019s Son.  David, and those who ascended the throne in Jerusalem after him, became sons of God\u2014his representatives to the people of Israel.   God had first told David that he would become God\u2019s son when David had told God his desire to build a permanent Temple for him.  After Nathan the prophet had told him no, God had made a covenant with David.  God told him that there would always be someone to sit on his throne (2 Samuel 7:5-16).   <\/p>\n<p>God had in mind more than just an endless string of human rulers. The ultimate ruler of Israel\u2014and of the nations of the world\u2014would be God\u2019s Son, Jesus Christ.  Just as the sacrifices of the Old Testament pictured Jesus\u2019 sacrifice on the cross, so the kings of Israel pictured Jesus\u2019 rule in the kingdom of Heaven.  God kept his promise to David, that he would always have a descendent ruling and that he would be God\u2019s son, when Jesus came.<\/p>\n<p>God promised that those who mistreated David or his descendents would suffer, just as those who blessed him would prosper.
