{"id":5451,"date":"2014-06-16T00:05:00","date_gmt":"2014-06-16T07:05:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/nettelhorst.com\/blog1\/?p=5451"},"modified":"2014-06-15T23:54:42","modified_gmt":"2014-06-16T06:54:42","slug":"deliverance","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/nettelhorst.com\/blog1\/2014\/06\/16\/deliverance\/","title":{"rendered":"Deliverance"},"content":{"rendered":"<blockquote><p><em>Listen to me, you who know righteousness, <br \/>\nyou people who have my teaching in your hearts; <br \/>\ndo not fear the reproach of others, <br \/>\nand do not be dismayed when they revile you. <br \/>\nFor the moth will eat them up like a garment, <br \/>\nand the worm will eat them like wool; <br \/>\nbut my deliverance will be forever, <br \/>\nand my salvation to all generations. <br \/>\nAwake, awake, put on strength, <br \/>\nO arm of the LORD! <br \/>\nAwake, as in days of old, <br \/>\nthe generations of long ago! <br \/>\nWas it not you who cut Rahab in pieces, <br \/>\nwho pierced the dragon? <br \/>\nWas it not you who dried up the sea, <br \/>\nthe waters of the great deep; <br \/>\nwho made the depths of the sea a way <br \/>\nfor the redeemed to cross over? <br \/>\nSo the ransomed of the LORD shall return, <br \/>\nand come to Zion with singing; <br \/>\neverlasting joy shall be upon their heads; <br \/>\nthey shall obtain joy and gladness, <br \/>\nand sorrow and sighing shall flee away. (Isaiah 51:7-11)<\/em>\n<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Criticism and problems are not forever.  Your critics, those who trouble you: they\u2019ll disappear like an old sweater in a closet without mothballs.  Israel had nothing to fear: the Babylonians would someday be gone, just like their enemies in the past had gone away, too.  God had taken care of the Egyptians, so why worry that God wouldn\u2019t take care of the current bad guys, too?<\/p>\n<p>Rahab was a mythological beast, a dragon in charge of chaos, that came to serve as a symbol for Egypt.  It was often used in poetry, as it is here.  In the myths, Rahab was chopped to bits by God allowing God to then create the universe.  In a similar way, Egypt was overthrown by the plagues that God had sent against it, allowing God to make his people into a new nation.  So the old myth was repurposed and applied to Egypt.  <\/p>\n<p>God promised his people that In the same way that God had delivered them from Egypt, so he would deliver them from the Assyrians and Babylonians who had taken them captive.  The current oppressors would meet the same end as all those other oppressors who had dared to rise up against God\u2019s people.
