He must die, because he has broken down Baal\u2019s altar and cut down the Asherah pole beside it.\u201d <\/p>\n<p>But Joash replied to the hostile crowd around him, \u201cAre you going to plead Baal\u2019s cause? Are you trying to save him? Whoever fights for him shall be put to death by morning! If Baal really is a god, he can defend himself when someone breaks down his altar.\u201d So that day they called Gideon \u201cJerub-Baal,\u201d saying, \u201cLet Baal contend with him,\u201d because he broke down Baal\u2019s altar.
