Faith can be defined as \u201caccepting the reality of what God has said.\u201d Faith is not simply believing that something good will happen, or that it will \u201cjust all work out\u201d; it is not \u201cfeeling warm about the possibilities of the future\u201d. One wrong definition of faith is, \u201cbelief in something for which there is no proof\u201d. Better, and more accurate to the biblical idea, faith is \u201cfidelity to promises.\u201d Biblically speaking, it is simply accepting God\u2019s words as truth.<\/p>\n
\tOne day a man was having lunch with his friend, the skeptic. He said, \u201cI have faith in God.\u201d<\/p>\n
\tThe skeptic looked at him and responded: \u201cProve it!\u201d<\/p>\n
\t\u201cOkay,\u201d said the man, \u201cTo show you how great my faith in God is, I\u2019m going to climb in an airplane, fly to 10,000 feet, and jump out\u2014without a parachute! I have faith in God.\u201d<\/p>\n
\tSo, the faithful man boarded an airplane; when the altimeter reached ten thousand feet, he walked to the door. Opening it, he cried in a loud voice: \u201cI BE-lieve! Oh God, save me! I believe you will!\u201d<\/p>\n
\tAnd then he jumped.<\/p>\n
\tAt his funeral, the skeptic commented, \u201cHe certainly proved to me he had faith.\u201d<\/p>\n
\tAmusing, yes? What was the faithful man\u2019s problem? His faith was not able to save him, because he misunderstood what constitutes true faith. God has never, ever promised to protect some fool who jumps out of an airplane at ten thousand feet. Faith can only be held for something God has promised, not for any and every fool thing imaginable we want. Just as God did not say, \u201cLet there be purple people with green spots\u201d, so God\u2019s promises are limited, too. Do not leap unless God tells you.<\/p>\n
