Daily Proverbs

The fear of the LORD is the beginning of knowledge,
but fools despise wisdom and instruction.

The Holy Bible : Today’s New International Version. 2005 (Pr 1:7). Grand Rapids, MI: Zondervan.

COMMENT:

Being afraid of God is rational. We have to realize that God is in control and can do anything he wants and that there is nothing we can do about it. But our relationship with God doesn’t end with fear. As the Apostle John wrote, “There is no fear in love. But perfect love drives out fear, because fear has to do with punishment. The one who fears is not made perfect in love.” (1 John 4:18). That’s why the fear of God is only the beginning of wisdom, the first step on the journey of a lifetime. Only a fool wouldn’t get on that road. Don’t be like the man too afraid to talk to the beautiful woman, who gives up on the chance for a relationship out of fear that she’ll tell him to get lost. After all, God won’t ever tell you to get lost.
